Well, I just got home from the sing-in. The director moves much too fast for me. We spent an hour and a half running through 7 extremely complicated pieces with quick tempos and off-beats, and only went through most of them once. I am not a very good music sight reader, and it was a whirlwind of notes passing me by before I could think of what they were.
It was very unlike the choir and opera rehearsals of my past, where parts would be worked through on each piece until we had them down. Instead, it was assumed that everybody could read, register and sing the right notes automatically without rehearsal at about 5 words/notes a second. It was downright scary to me, and I have been singing since before I could talk.
At Martha's prompting, I asked if this is the way he normally runs rehearsals, and the answer was, "yes". I strongly doubt I will be able to do this and keep up and learn these pieces properly. However, Martha thinks I could, and the other Chorale members seem to think I could, so I promised (against my better judgement) that I would give it a try. My audition is next Tuesday. For the first time, I hope that my best is not good enough, because I don't think I am up to the challenge that this group seems to offer.
I am off to bed now. Nighty-night!
